Posted on 05/01/2019

FLINT – Genesee Intermediate School District (GISD) leaders are excited to announce Genesee County’s First Annual Countywide Pitch Competition! The competition will feature some of the county’s most creative high school students as they face off in a “Shark Tank” style setting to pitch their business ideas. The competition will be held Wednesday, May 1, 2019, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at the Genesee Career Institute’s Innovation Zone.

Participants in the competition will include 18 high school students from schools across Genesee County. The students are all members of their high school’s Youth Entrepreneurship Club. Each club held an initial round of competitions for an innovative business idea. The winner from each high school’s club will pitch their idea Wednesday evening to a group of local judges. The top five winners will not only receive some great prizes, they will also get to spend one on one time with a local entrepreneur.

Youth Entrepreneurship is a new initiative in Genesee County designed to spark interest and help boost entrepreneurial mindsets among our students.  The GISD was awarded a grant through the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation to set up Youth Entrepreneurship Clubs at high schools across the county, train participating Club Advisors and support the first countywide Pitch Competition.  The planning group partnered with Youth Entrepreneurship leaders in Ohio to support the start of these efforts locally.

“We are proud to bring this pitch competition to our community,” said Steve Tunnicliff, Ph.D., Associate Superintendent of the Genesee Intermediate School District. “Our goal is to celebrate the creativity of area students and encourage an entrepreneurial mindset. We appreciate the Mott Foundation’s support for entrepreneurship programs throughout our county, including this competition. We are confident that the pitch competition will become a tradition in our community that students look forward to each year and strive to be part of.”
