English as a Second Language

History and Purpose

The English as a Second Language (ESL) Program at the Genesee Intermediate School District (GISD) was developed in 1993 through a collaboration with the UM-Flint's Bilingual Education Program. Its purpose is to assist schools in Genesee County in providing a more comprehensive education to language minority students.

In 1997, GISD continued the ESL program after the Bilingual Education Program at UM-Flint was discontinued. GISD's ESL program provides English language instruction to students who are English Language Learners (ELLs) and instructional support to school districts and building staff.
