Genesee ISD is excited to announce that students from its Genesee Early College Robotics Team, TESLA, placed 85th with 153 ranking points at the FIRST® in Michigan State Championship. The state competition was held at Saginaw Valley State University on April 4 – 6, 2024.

Genesee Early College’s Robotics Team, TESLA (Technology, Engineering, Science, Leadership, and Academics) was established in 2013 with 2014 being their “rookie” season. This was the first year to make it to the State Championship for the FIRST® in Michigan Robotics Competition. The team attributes their success this season to the coaches, mentors, and sponsors, who have allowed them the opportunity to compete with some of the best teams in the nation.

Team TESLA continues to work hard hoping to empower other students in the community to pursue STEAM activities and succeed academically. They plan to give back to the community and sponsors throughout the year, and would love to show off their robot at Genesee County community events.

“We are very proud of the progress that Team Tesla has made in just a short time. They have dedicated many hours building, creating, and practicing to earn an opportunity to make their first appearance at States,” stated Robert McAllister, Principal of Genesee Early College. “Congratulations to the team and thank you to the coaching staff for the work they have put into this program and into our Team Tesla students.”

The goal of FIRST® in Michigan is to inspire young people to be science and technology leaders and innovators. The FIRST® in Michigan State Robotics Competition for high school students combines the excitement of a varsity sport with a robot-building experience that encompasses design, machining, programming, and marketing. Teams compete in qualifying district events, with winners being determined by a point system.
